NHS funding

Thank you for contacting me regarding future National Health Service (NHS) funding.

The government has just announced plans to add an extra £20bn per year into the NHS by 2023. That would be an average annual increase of 3.4 per cent over the next five years. Health providers have called for this funding and the government has listened and acted. The NHS Executive Management team, led by Mr Simon Stevens, Chief Executive of NHS England, have now been tasked to produce a 10-year plan for the NHS which will work alongside the government’s health policy. The increase in funding will partly be funded by the savings made from European Union contribution made by Britain after Brexit. However, the Prime Minister has been clear that other ways of funding – including a tax increase – will also be considered. Full details will be set out in the Autumn Statement.

Alongside this the government is currently offering local councils an additional £2bn to help them fund adult social care services in a time of great pressure. It is important that we get people into social care to avoid any unnecessary bed-blocking.

As I am sure you will agree this further commitment to our NHS is warmly welcomed and shows the governments dedication to our great health service.

There was an event in Parliament yesterday hosted by the lobby group 38 Degrees regarding the NHS. Unfortunately, I was unable to attend due to prior commitments, however I will make sure to catch up with colleagues who did attend the event.

Thank you again for contacting me about this important matter.
