MP backs Tory local election manifesto

Local MP, Andrew Jones, has given his backing to a ‘forward-looking and ambitious’ manifesto from Harrogate Council’s Conservative group of councillors.  The manifesto is available here.

The manifesto includes proposals to boost the district’s markets in Ripon and Knaresborough, use compulsory purchase to bring long-term empty shops and houses in to use and lobbying for powers to compel chain retailers to source produce or consumables locally.

There are proposals to open a new pool in Ripon and a gym in Knaresborough.  There are also plans to charge developers for homes they promise but then do not deliver and introduce a deposit scheme so developers who damage grass verges and pavements have to pay for their repair.

Andrew Jones said: “There are a number of interesting and practical proposals here that are good for our district.  The manifesto addresses housing shortages for young people, helps support local businesses and provides for new public facilities.  It is good to see the savings from the new Civic Centre being used for the benefit of communities across the district and to see those saving having an impact so quickly.

“Many of the proposals could have national significance and so I will be discussing them with Ministers.  It is good to see our area at the forefront of fresh thinking.”
